The Manhattan Flower market in New York

As soon as I found out that there was a Flower market in New York, I immediately decided to put it on my bucket list!

The flower market is on West 28th street in Chelsea. It was moved there in 1890 and in spite of the gentrification, it’s still in the same place. Of course now it’s smaller than last century, but it’s still a hidden treasure, even for many Newyorkers. It’s amazing that along one street you can find such an incredible variety of flower and plant shops.

After my first visit, which left me utterly amazed, I decided to go back and buy some flowers to create my own New York bouquet! The flower market opens at 5.00 am for florists with an amazing choice and then later on to the public.

So I organized my expedition to leave bright and early 6.30 am. I was so excited as I approached West 28th, I had butterflies in my stomach!

As soon as I arrived there, I took a look at all the flowers and was astonished by the huge variety and colours. Since I hadn’t yet decided on the palette, I let myself be drawn to a particular flower and then chose the other ones. And so it happened with a glorious autumnal hydrangea mycrophilla which was the perfect show stopping flower. I paired it with some vivid orange and dramatic burgundy dahlias, energetic deep pink cosmos, delicate pale pink butterfly ranuncolus and autumn branches and foliage.

I was really impressed with the selections of branches, berries and bewitched by the shape, size and colours of dahlias!

With my flowers wrapped in thick brown paper I hurried happily back to the hotel. On the 16th floor I started to create my extra-large bouquet, letting myself be guided by the colours and flowers. It was truly a zen like experience!

And then off to Central Park where the bouquet’s palette was a perfect match against the autumn foliage of the majestic trees.

A tip for everyone passionate about flowers. When you’re travelling try and find a local market and treat yourself by creating a unique bouquet to remind you of your trip!
